Natasha Lyonne Talks About Her Chest Scar From Open-heart Surgery

Natasha Lyonne is an American actress, writer, and producer best known for her role as Nadia Vulvokov on the Netflix show Russian Doll, in which she played a significant role in creating, producing, writing, and directing.

Due to her exceptional performance in the series, she has received three Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Currently, she is appearing in the Peacock mystery series Poker Face.

In addition to her work on Poker Face, Lyonne has also appeared in several other films and television shows, including But I’m a Cheerleader, Scary Movie 2, and American Pie.

Apart from that, she is best recognized for her role in the Netflix series Orange is the New Black. She has received critical acclaim for her performances and is considered one of the most talented actresses of her generation.

Natasha Lyonne talked about her chest scar

Lyonne is known for her role as Nicky Nichols on the Netflix series Orange is the New Black, where she has a scar on her chest, which she has publicly discussed in interviews.

In the third season of the show, the character Nicky Nichols undergoes heart surgery due to her heroin addiction, which mirrors the real-life procedure that Lyonne underwent in 2012 after five years of being sober.

When the character displays her scar from the surgery, no makeup is needed, as it was actually Lyonne’s real scar.

She told Fanbolt, “I feel very lucky to play Nicky. There’s no shortage of things for me to draw on when it comes to her back story.”

“By no means was that an enjoyable scene [showing off her scar] for me to play. I had to call on memories of painful feelings. And it was tricky because my experience was so similar but yet so far removed.”

Lyonne has repeatedly revealed that the scar resulted from a surgical procedure she underwent to correct a congenital heart defect. She has spoken candidly about the physical and emotional impact of the surgery, saying that it has left her with a lasting reminder of the experience.

Natasha Lyonne struggled with drug

Lyonne, 43, revealed that she resorted to drug use due to a deep depression caused by her insecurities in her 20s.

However, she is grateful for the opportunity to start again. She attributes her drug use to feelings of inadequacy and wanting to fit in with other young women in Hollywood.

She stated, “I sort of fell victim to the teenage insecurity of, ‘I’m not enough’. I had this desperation, and wanted to look and be like other girls I’d see around (Hollywood).”

In 2005, Lyonne was admitted to Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan, suffering from hepatitis C, infective endocarditis, and a collapsed lung. She was also receiving methadone treatment for her heroin addiction.

In January 2006, a warrant was issued for her arrest after she failed to attend a court hearing relating to previous legal issues. Her lawyer claimed an emergency had arisen but did not provide further details.

Later that year, she was admitted to a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center and appeared in court. The judge granted her a conditional discharge.

In an interview with The Guardian, the actress shared, “I mean, in many ways, I’m very grateful I had such a public addiction story, you know? Sure, I find it tedious that 13 years later, people still want to talk about it as if it’s ‘juicy’. To me, what is more interesting about it is that I never feel like anybody in that position is a stranger to me.”

In January 2023, Malone revealed that she was pregnant with a baby. She posted a photo clicked by DeLorenzo where she was cradling her baby bump.

She wrote a poem, “Womb to womb / To beating wing / I climbed out of the eternal / And into the shape of me,” years ago before she was pregnant, thinking of her mother.

She continued, “And the woman she was when she had me. And the woman I was reaching to become. The shape your desires make out of you. The body you become to hold your dreams. It’s with two feet firmly on the ground and a heart swelling in an ocean of love that I’d like to share the new shape I am becoming to hold the greatest dream of them all.”

In May 2016, the couple announced the birth of their first and only child, Ode Mountain DeLorenzo Malone. She posted a photo of herself with DeLorenzo and Ode and claimed that it was the best weekend of her life.

She wrote, “What an incredible blessing to be chosen by this amazing, kind, gentle, and beautiful soul to be his parents. Humbled and in complete awe that we get to experience the most ancient and transcendent love that exists.”

After dating for two years and three months after welcoming their baby, the duo got engaged on August 30, 2016. Malone took to Instagram to announce their engagement.

She showed off her engagement ring along with a photo of her son, Ode. In the now-deleted post, she wrote a long caption about how much she loved her soon-to-be husband.

She gushed, “One day, after all the youthful rushing quiets in your heart, you realize there’s nothing more you need. Nothing more you want to achieve than to build your life around love. And oh the things we will get to build together. I couldn’t be happier. I love you, Ethan.”

She uploaded the post with the hashtag “#isaidyes” and a diamond ring emoji. It looked like the duo were going strong, and they were planning on getting married.

Unfortunately, that day never came. Three years after getting engaged, the two broke up in February 2019.

Jena Malone’s current boyfriend

Soon after breaking up with DeLorenzo, Malone started dating her current boyfriend, Ebert.

Ebert is an American singer, songwriter, and composer. He is best known as the main vocalist and composer of the American bands Ima Robot and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

Malone appeared in Ebert’s music video for the song, ‘Her Love,’ in 2019 and the duo discussed the song with Hero Magazine.

Talking about the song, Malone said, “What’s interesting is that when I first listened to Her Love, I didn’t have the lyrics, and yet I understood what you were saying in the song just through the music, that godly, beautiful love. Then I listened to the lyrics and I realized that it’s full of these beautiful double entendres, starting with golden showers [laughs].”

She also believed that the song was about his daughter. However, the song was about love and Ebert chose Malone for the video, for which he took the snippets candidly.

Two years after dating Ebert, Malone revealed that she was pansexual and came out on Instagram. In her 2022 interview with the Hollywood Reporter, she said, “I feel like I’m a little bit late to the game in being able to have less shame.”

“I’ve been loving the process of learning more about myself and others through different terms that open windows, those windows then turns into doors and then I arrive at a place to find all this cool stuff out there,” she continued.

She revealed that it was easy for her to come out because of her family dynamics where there were queer people. She grew up with two mothers, who were in a relationship.

Moreover, her sister is also queer. She said, “I have the whole spectrum. It’s nice to be able to have these different types of conversations with everyone. I feel really blessed to have an accepting family.”
